Notwithstanding the Cape Town Book Fair launch of Antjie Krog and Fiona Moodie’s Fynbos Fairies / Fynbosfeetjies, a second event to help spread the word about this delight of a book was called for – and so it was that the Gardens Wordsworth was packed two nights ago with rhyme-lovers young and old.
In fact, all three of the authors associated with the book put in appearances: Krog, Moodie and Gus Ferguson, who translated Krog’s fairy rhymes into English – sometimes so well that, as Krog admitted during her introduction, she was forced to revisit and improve upon her original efforts!

There are flower fairies living around each species of Cape Fynbos, and Antjie Krog and Fiona Moodie have captured their spirit and images in this delightful new book for children, Fynbos Fairies / Fynbosfeetjies.
The fairies work and play, they tend the fynbos or make a mess. The laugh, they sleep, they dream – life’s busy for your average fynbos fairy in the veld!
Here’s a slideshow of some of the book’s illustrations: can you pick the fairies out?

Enjoy these snaps from the Cape Town Book Fair launch of Antjie Krog and Fiona Moodie’s new collaboration, Fynbos Fairies / Fynbosfeetjies. It’s a richly-illustrated children’s book about South African flower fairies, with rhymes by Krog and flitting, flying friends by Moodie.
It was essentially a book signing, without much chat, so it’s best to let the vivacity of the occasion speak through images.

Fiona Moodie, illustrator of the Umuzi title Fynbosfeetjies / Fynbos Fairies (created in collaboration with Antjie Krog, who wrote the rhymes) will appear on the Random House-Umuzi programme at the Cape Town Book Fair, Sunday 17 June, 16h00 at the Random House-Umuzi stand (H10).
We asked her thirteen questions about her illustrating life.
Tune into the Random House-Umuzi blog each day during the run up to the Book Fair on 16 June to see a different author’s answers to these questions!
1. What is the first book you remember reading?
Finn Family Moomintroll by Tove Jansson, first published in English 1950. I think she is one of the greatest and most mysterious writers for children and she did her own lovely illustrations too.
2. What are you reading at the moment?
A Tranquil Star, stories by Primo Levi

Please join us for the launch of a lavishly illustrated book of new children’s rhymes, Fynbos Fairies / Fynbosfeetjies, on Sunday 17 June at the Cape Town Book Fair.
The book features rhymes by Antjie Krog and illustrations by Fiona Moodie, who together tease out the shape and thoughts of a hithertoo-undiscovered species of flower fairy, the fynbos fairy – just as beautiful, delicate and unique to Africa as its floral namesake.

Antjie Krog, author of the Fiona Moodie-illustrated Umuzi title Fynbosfeetjies / Fynbos Fairies (inter alia), will appear on the Random House-Umuzi programme at the Cape Town Book Fair, Sunday 17 June, 16h00 at the Random House-Umuzi stand (H10).
We asked her six questions about her writing life (instead of the regulation thirteen!), which she answered in Afrikaans.
Tune into the Random House-Umuzi blog each day during the run up to the Book Fair on 16 June to see a different author’s answers to these questions!
